Official Information Act request: Move-on orders
Thank you for your email of 13 March 2026 to the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry). In your email,
you asked for information under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act) about the Minister’s
instructions on move-on orders. Specifically, you requested:
I've already asked the Minister himself regarding the advice you have provided through to
him through your ministerial briefings.

However I would like to ask you to provide the below outside briefings:

a) Instructions provided by any of the ministers to you (ministry) relating to move-on

orders including requests for briefing.

b) Official requests / communique both to you and from you relating to move-on orders

including emails requesting data, evidence and information etc.

To shine the light on how the minister is performing decision making & oversight on this

matter on what matters both the ministry and minister considered on making their
decisions affecting New Zealanders at large.
We are preparing our response to your request. However, your request covers a large amount of
information. Responding within the original timeframe would unreasonably disrupt the Ministry’s
work, and we also need more time to complete the consultations required to make a decision.
For these reasons, I am extending the time limit under sections 15A(1)(a) and 15A(1)(b) of the
Act. We wil  respond to you by 15 May 2026
You have the right, under section 28 of the Act, to make a complaint to the Ombudsman about
the decision to extend the time for responding to your request. The Office of the Ombudsman
may be contacted by phone on: 0800 802 602, by email at: [email address], or
via the webform: Make a complaint (for members of the public) | Ombudsman New Zealand.
