I refer to your request for information dated 3 March 2026 made under the Official Information Act 
1982 (the Act).  You have requested the following information: 
 
Please provide a list of the top grade achieved in LAWS490 from 2010-2025. If the 2010 data is 
not available, please provide the top grade from the earliest year available. 
 
Anonymised statistical academic results data for papers offered by the University are published on our 
website: https://www.otago.ac.nz/about/quickstats.  We do this so that all students can access this 
information at any time.  The data excludes information we would withhold under section 9(2)(a) of 
the Act, to protect the privacy and wellbeing of students. 
 
The published spreadsheet indicates the number of students who achieved a particular grade or 
percentage mark for semester 1, semester 2, full year and summer school papers for each year from 
2019 to 2025.  Further information on the University’s Proactive Release Policy for Academic Results is 
available here: https://www.otago.ac.nz/administration/policies/policy-collection/proactive-release-
policy-for-academic-results. 
   
Data has been published as it was held on 31 December 2025.  If grade and mark distribution data for 
any paper was not confirmed at this date, the data for the paper may not yet be published.   
 
Accordingly, we decline your request under section 18(d) of the Act, as the information you have 
requested is, or soon will be publicly available.  We do however hope the published information will be 
helpful. 
 
If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request, section 28(3) of the Act 
provides you with the right to ask an Ombudsman to investigate and review this response. However, 
we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
