Tēnā koe N Roberts,
Official Information Act request relating to Apple Enhanced Safety Alerts
Thank you for your email of 18 February 2026 in which you requested:
Is NEMA aware of Apple's new Enhanced Safety Alerts, particularly bi-level
earthquake alerts, which provides early earthquake warnings to iPhone users
(https://support.apple.com/en-nz/102516)?
Are there any plans to work with Apple in order to bring the aforementioned feature

(or any similar early earthquake warning system for iPhone users) to Aotearoa
given the significant earthquake risk this country faces, similar to the Android
Earthquake Alerts System that is presently available here?
NEMA welcomes new innovations that have the potential to help keep people safe during
earthquakes and supports developing scientific capability in New Zealand. However, it is
critical that early warning systems are reliable and fit for purpose for New Zealand’s seismic
environment. Currently, there are no plans to work with Apple to bring their earthquake early
warning (EEW) feature to New Zealand. This is primarily due to the absence of the input
information required to support an appropriate EEW system for New Zealand’s context.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision under
section 28(3) of the OIA.
