Your request for information was received on 10 February 2026 and requested information about the
Marton Water Treatment Plant upgrades. Your questions and our response can be found below:
Question 1:
“Marton Water Treatment Plant - The Annual Report for 2013/14 listed as a major
achievement for the year the completion of the Marton Water Treatment Plant Upgrade.
Please provide a tabulated list of all the key components included in the upgrade and
associated cost”.
Response:
A tabulated list of the key components included in the upgrade, and associated cost, is
provided below.
Key Component of upgrade
Cost
Marton continued water impound management control
$748,710
Initial investigation and consent
$200,000
Development of the Tutaenui production bore and supply $1,003,050
lines to the water treatment plant
Construction of a 6,000 m3 treated water storage reservoir
$2,328,750
Electrical, control and process upgrades
$1,194,750
A new enclosed treatment plant building
$992,250
Question 2:
“In addition, was an assessment carried out to understand why the treatment process has
failed before commissioning the procurement of a new plant”.
Response:
The current treatment process did not fail. The upgrades at that time were required for water
treatment process upgrades and water storage requirements to ensure compliance with New
Zealand Drinking Water Standards and firefighting capability in Marton. The Marton Water
Strategy was initiated to improve the quality of the water supply to Marton during the
summer months when the source water is exposed to the risk of algal blooms that creates
unpleasant odour and taste in the Marton water supply.
