Tēnā koe John,
Thank you for your request to the Department of Conservation (DOC), received on 10 February
2026, in which you asked:
‘The Minister of Conservation is seeking nominations for conservation boards in
2026.
"Conservation Boards (15 boards throughout New Zealand) "
Closes: 30 January 2026
May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have
call for public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. Also, how many applications
you have received from the public (I noted Nominations close 30 January 2026)
and how many you have received from other nominating agencies such as TPK
or Ministry of women etc for each of your conservation boards. Also, how many
vacancies you had for each of the conservation boards and when you anticipate
the process will finish.’
We have considered your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the OIA).
Your questions and our responses are listed below:
1. May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call for
public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website

2. Also, how many applications you have received from the public
In total, DOC received 171 applications for the public vacancies on the Conservation Boards.
3. How many you have received from other nominating agencies such as TPK or
Ministry of women etc for each of your conservation boards
We do not record whether applications are submitted through nominating agencies. All
applicants apply directly through the same process. As a result, the Department does not hold
information showing how many applications were received through nominating agencies such
as Te Puni Kōkiri or the Ministry for Women. This part of your request is therefore refused under
section 18(g) of the Official Information Act, as the information requested is not held by the
Department.
4. How many vacancies you had for each of the conservation boards and when you
anticipate the process will finish.
Please see the table below for the number of public vacancies available on the Conservation

We anticipate the process will be completed by the beginning of July 2026, though the final
decision sits with the Minister of Conservation.
You are entitled to seek an investigation and review of my decision by writing to an
Ombudsman as provided by section 28(3) of the OIA.
Please note that this letter (with your personal details removed) may be published on DOC’s
