Dear Ian,
Official Information Act request: Comments from Reserve Bank Governor
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request, received on 20 January
2026. You requested:
“Why would an independent central bank governor need your permission to criticise
Donald Trump's attack on the Fed? Either she is independent or she is not, and if she
is then she is the only person who can decide what she shoulf do. Do you ask Winston
Peters before saying anything? I hope not. It would help if you were more explicit on
the Orange Nazi's activities: keeping quiet never helps anybody.”
Under
the Act, a distinction exists between a request for information held by the Prime
Minister (official information) and a request that would require the creation of new
information; for example, a request for an opinion or an explanation, where these do not exist
at the time a request is received.
I believe you are asking for the Prime Minister to provide an opinion and, accordingly, your
request is refused under section 18(g) of the Act.
For your awareness, the Prime Minister has provided his views on related matters as part of
a media standup, a video recording of which is available at the following link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-zSPD5bPIE. You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision under
section 28(3) of the Act.
Yours sincerely,
Cameron Burrows
Chief of Staff
