Dear John
I refer to your email of 18 January 2026 to the Ministry of Justice. On 20 January 2026, your
request was transferred to the Centre for Family Violence and Sexual Violence Prevention
(the Centre) for response. The Centre is leading implementation of Te Aorerekura – the
National Strategy to Eliminate Family Violence and Sexual Violence which you can read
about here

I noted, ‘The Minister for the Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence is appointing a
new Ministerial Advisory Group to provide free and frank advice’ preventfvsv.govt.nz/

what platform you have call for public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. A copy of your
ad as well and pay rate. Also, how many applications you have received for each of the
role from the public and how many you have received from other nominating agencies
such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for your role. How many you have shortlisted and
how many you have interviewed. How many vacancies are you looking to fil ?
The Centre is coordinating the appointment process and providing advice to Hon Karen
Chhour, Minister for the Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence, about establishing the
new Family Violence and Sexual Violence Ministerial Advisory Group. The Minister will take
recommendations to Cabinet’s Appointments and Honours Committee, which wil consider
the appointments. Relevant Cabinet papers and written advice to the Minister can be found
on the Centre website here:
preventfvsv.govt.nz/about-us/cabinet-papers. Your request has been treated in accordance with the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
Your questions and my responses are as follows:
1. How you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call for public
nominations e.g. govt.jobs website.
The Centre invited expressions of interest for the Ministerial Advisory Group via its website.
The application window was from Monday 10 November 2025 to Friday 16 January 2026.
The Centre also shared information about how to apply for the advisory group in the
following ways.
• Information about the expressions of interest process was included in the Centre’s
17 December 2025 Pānui. This monthly newsletter is emailed to approximately 1,480
recipients, which includes individuals and family violence and sexual violence services
1
providers and advocacy groups. It is also available on our website:
preventfvsv.govt.nz/assets/newsletters/2025-december-panui.pdf
• Information was included in the Centre’s November 2025 newsletter to government
agencies. This newsletter is sent to agencies involved in implementing Te Aorerekura.
• Attendees at the Centre’s Systems Working Group (SWG) meeting were advised of the
expressions of interest process. The SWG is a monthly meeting that brings
together government agencies and groups working in the family and sexual violence
sectors, to share emerging issues and opportunities, have a place to stay connected,
and share work and projects.
• Attendees at various community relationship meetings were advised of the expressions
of interest process. Information was sent directly to these stakeholders for circulation.
• Expressions of interest were sought through
Vine NZ. • Some agencies have also shared the information with their own databases.
Additionally, I am advised that the Minister promoted the opportunity in meetings with
stakeholders. The Minister also reached out directly to the Coalition’s Chiefs of Staff and the
portfolio spokespeople from Labour and the Greens.
2. A copy of your ad.
An archived copy of the ad is accessible here:
web.archive.org/web/20251231072958/https:/ preventfvsv.govt.nz/contact/ministerial-
advisory-group. The Centre did not use recruitment advertisements or employment websites
as part of the process to invite expressions of interest.
3. Pay rate.
Once the appointment process is complete, members will be remunerated in line with
Cabinet’s fees framework, which is publicly available
: www.dpmc.govt.nz/publications/co-25-
2-cabinet-fees-framework-members-appointed-bodies-which-crown-has-interest. Within this framework, the Chair or co-Chairs will be paid $825 per day, and the members
will receive $680 per day. Members wil be paid for 1.5 days for each meeting, which will
cover meeting attendance and necessary preparation and equates to a maximum of nine
days per year.
4. How many applications you have received for each of the role from the public.
The Centre received a total of 86 expressions of interest. The group wil include up to eight
members including a Chair or co-Chairs.
2
5. How many you have received from other nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of
women etc.
Al expressions of interest were required to be sent by individuals to the Centre’s email
address. There was no separate or formal process for agencies to nominate applicants.
However, an official from the Ministry for Ethnic Communities emailed the Centre to endorse
four applicants who had applied directly. The Centre does not hold any further information
about how, if at all, other agencies may have supported any particular applicants.
6. How many you have shortlisted and how many you have interviewed.
At the time of your request, a shortlist has not yet been made, and the interview process has
not yet started. The Centre is refusing this part of your request under section 18(g) that the
requested information is not held.
7. How many vacancies are you looking to fil .
The Family Violence and Sexual Violence Ministerial Advisory Group wil have up to eight
members. As part of our commitment to transparency and open government, the Centre will
be proactively releasing information related to the appointment process in due course. This
will be after the appointments have been approved by Cabinet’s Appointments and Honours
Commit ee.
You have the right under section 28(3) of the Act to seek an investigation and review of this
response by the Ombudsman. Information about how to do this is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone on 0800 802 602.
Please note the Centre may publish its responses to Of icial Information Act requests on its
website. Identifying information wil be redacted.
Kind regards
