Dear Emilia
Thank you for your email of 3 January 2026 inquiring about cameras along State Highway 1 (SH1) in
Auckland.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) uses cameras instal ed on state highways across New
Zealand for the purposes of traffic management, enforcement of the speed limit or red-light
compliance, security and vehicle detection, and for tolling (e.g., Tauranga Eastern Link and Tauranga
Takitimu Drive). On some parts of our network, we also use cameras to monitor commercial vehicle
regulatory compliance at our Commercial Vehicle Safety Centres (CVSC).
There are 241 Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed along the SH1 Motorway Corridor
between Johnstone’s Hill Tunnels and Bombay. These cameras monitor the general road network to
enable our Auckland Traffic Operations Centre to support traffic management and incident responses.
Of these, 32 cameras also provide feeds for customer information as part of the journey planner
information, which you can find at:
Traffic cameras for Auckland | NZTA Journey Planner
In addition, there are 105 security and vehicle detection cameras instal ed at Victora Park Tunnel,
Johnstone’s Hill Tunnels and on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
There are two fixed safety cameras on SH1 in the Auckland region – Dome Val ey and Wel sford.
These cameras enforce the speed limit. Al fixed safety cameras are signposted with
Safety Camera
Area signs.
There are 61 CCTV traffic management cameras installed along state highways in Tauranga which
are operated by the Tauranga Transport Operations Centre.

If you would like to discuss this matter further with NZTA, you are welcome to contact Ministerial
Services by email at [NZTA request email].
Yours sincerely
Jacqui Hori-Hoult
