Your request for information under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings
Act 1987 (LGOIMA)
– [CAS-1261768-W1C5S6]
Kia ora Emilia,
I am writing in response to your official information request received on the 3rd of January 2026 in
relation to cameras operated by Auckland Transport (AT). Please see below answers to your
questions.
1. A list of al in use or planned public facing CCTV cameras owned or operated by The
Group, including GPS coordinates, make and model.
Please find attached to this letter an excel file containing a list of all public facing CCTV cameras
currently in use across AT.
2. A list of al in use or planned cameras for Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
owned or operated by The Group, including GPS coordinates, make, and model.
Cameras that function as an Automatic Number Plate Recognition device are highlighted in yellow
within the excel file referred to in our response to question 1.
3. A list of all in use or planned cameras for traffic enforcement e.g. red light, point-to-
point and standalone speed cameras owned or operated by The Group, including GPS
coordinates, make, model, and enforcement mode(s).
Cameras with the business unit label ‘SVL’ in the excel file referred to in our response to question
1 are used for traffic enforcement purposes.
For your information, AT does not hold data relating to red light cameras, as these are managed by
the NZ Police.
4. What kinds of enforcement activities are currently undertaken or planned using the
cameras identified in requests 1-3.
AT uses CCTV systems to support enforcement activities only where AT holds the relevant
statutory enforcement powers. These activities include:
• supporting the prevention, detection, investigation, and enforcement of offences for which
Auckland Transport has authority (e.g., parking, bus lane, and transit-lane enforcement in
specific contexts)
• providing camera imagery to support enforcement by other authorised agencies where
appropriate and lawful
• monitoring and evidential support for events or incidents affecting the transport network
Enforcement functionality is applied only to designated enforcement cameras (e.g., ANPR or
SVL-unit (Special Vehicle Lane) cameras); standard public-facing cameras are not used for
general enforcement.
5. What kinds of non-enforcement activities are currently undertaken or planned using
the cameras identified in requests 1-3.
In line with Auckland Transport’s
CCTV policy (2025), CCTV systems are used for a wide range of
non-enforcement activities, including:
• supporting the safety and security of AT staff, customers, and the public using AT premises
and the transport network
• providing travel information and supporting the smooth operation of public transport
services
• protecting public assets and infrastructure
• supporting inspections and remote working, particularly in areas dif icult to access
• assisting with issue resolution involving public services or customer reports
• monitoring and optimising the Auckland transport system, including vehicle and pedestrian
movements
• monitoring and managing major events, construction activities, and operational impacts
• supporting statistical analysis and research for transport planning
• supporting the development of systems to improve safety, optimisation, and management
of the network
These activities reflect AT’s powers and functions under the Local Government (Auckland Council)
Act 2009 and related delegations.
Should you believe that we have not dealt with your request appropriately, you are able to make a
complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman in accordance with section 27(3) of the LGOIMA Act
and seek an investigation and review regarding this matter.
