SPECIFICATION HISTORY
1.1
This specification was created as a result of R&D project 220.
1.2
April 2008: Updated specification to the new format and fabric details were inserted.

SCOPE
2.1
This specification defines the minimum requirements for the manufacture of a Trouser Fire
Retardant DPM to be worn as a fire protective trouser by New Zealand Army personnel.
2.2
If the contractor desires to alter the design, material, components or manufacturing
techniques of an item; written details, together with appropriate samples, are to be
forwarded to YASL agent. The request only becomes authorised on issue of a Specification
Variation Permit.

PACKAGING, MARKING & DELIVERY
3.1
Packaging, marking and delivery shall be in accordance with the terms of the contract.
3.2
Items are to be individually bagged and bar-coded.

INSPECTION
4.1
Inspection shall be carried out in accordance with the terms of the contract.

USE OF SPECIFICATION
5.1
This specification is to be used for Defence contracts only and is to be returned to NZDF’s
agent when an amendment is issued and at the end of each contract. Use of this
specification for other than Defence contracts may result in legal action.

DESIGN
6.1
Slide fastener fly front,
6.2
Waistband, front pleat, corps belt loops attached with reinforcing strips inside trouser.
6.3
Slanted side pockets, hip pocket with button cover, thigh bellows pockets with button
closure and flap with buttonhole bearer.
6.4
Reinforcement patches at seat and knees, draw-cord in leg hems.
7
MATERIALS
7.1
Contractor Supplied Materials: The following items shall be supplied by the contractor or
an alternative could be sourced and used only if approved in writing by NZDF’s agent:

Cloth: 93%Nomex fibre, 5% Kevlar fibre and 2% Anti-static fibre, disruptive
pattern, twill weave.

Thread: Nomex, colour to match, stitching and over locking thread as per current

Label: One manufacturer’s / size and one care; or one, two sided if preferred.
Pre-shrunk, woven fabric detailed in Annex D.

Insert the manufacturer’s name and year of manufacture and the size.
(2)
Note that all labels are placed inside the garment and that trade names
and brand labels are not to be attached or displayed on the outside of the
garment at any time.

SEWING
8.1
Stitch Type:
a.
Lockstitch: All seams, waistband and pocket bags.
b.
Over lock:
All raw edges.
c.
Flat Fell: out leg and centre back seam.
d.
Bar Tack: Fly, side pocket mouths, hip pocket, belt loops, cord at cuff.
e.
Buttons: Buttons shall be double sewn, through all four holes in the button.
8.2
Seam Allowance: 1.5cm flat fell seams and 1cm for remainder.
8.3
Finish: Cleanly finished, free of stains with all loose threads removed. All raw edges
shall be over locked, or turned under.
8.4
Top Stitching: All must be evenly stitched, with no breaks in the line of stitching. Back
tacking must be clean and straight. Tension on the machine must be set correctly, so as
not to create any roped or fluted edges; short, long, loose or tight stitches.

MANUFACTURE
9.1
Dart: Securely finished at back hip, positioned as illustrated.
9.2
Fly:
a.
Standard construction with button bearer, top stitched 3.5cm from edge.
b.
Fly piece extends to fork seam.

Double row of stitching and bar tack at base of fly.
9.3
Pockets:
a.
Bellows:
(1)
Facing double turned and top stitched down for button reinforcement.
(2)
Edges of bellows mitred edge stitched.
(3)
Positioned and edge stitched to trouser as illustrated.
(4)
Flap top stitched 8mm from edge.
(5)
Buttonhole bearer bagged 6mm topstitched and buttonholed 2.5cm long,
centred and set back 1cm from mitre.
(6)
Attached to flap and back tacked on edge..
(7)
Flap positioned as illustrated, folded down and top stitched 8mm from
edge.
(8)
Button attached to pocket to register with buttonhole.
b.
Side Pockets: Self lined and mouth top stitched 8mm from edge. Bar tacked at
base and 4cm below waistband.

Pocket bag: Ensure bag is keep free and do not tack bottom of front
loops through pleats.
c.
Hip Pocket:
(1)
Raw edge turned under and edge stitched, buttonholed 2.5cm long,
centrally positioned 5cm from folded edge.
(2)
Folded edge turned down to create button cover, and anchored with
vertical row of stitching 6cm each side of raw pocket edge. Edge stitch
along open edge of flap to vertical row of stitching. Bar tacked at base of
vertical stitching.
(3)
Pocket positioned as illustrated and edge stitched down, bar tacked
either side of pocket mouth.
(4)
One button sewn to trouser, through seat patch, to register with
buttonhole.
9.4
Belt Loops:
a.
Edge stitched, securely bar tacked at each end, reinforcement strips under bar
tacking.
b.
Six loops one each placed in front of centre front side 6cm from centre front, one
on each side seam and one each side 5cm from centre back.
9.5
Pleat: Pleated towards front and top stitched down 3cm with reverse tack at end.

Waistband:
a.
Self lined and edge stitched.

Centre front horizontal buttonhole 2.5cm long, set back 1cm from left end and
centrally positioned.
c.
Button sewn to left end to register with buttonhole.
9.7
Reinforcement Patches:
a.
Seat: Edges turned under and stitched on inside of trouser as illustrated.
b.
Knees: Edges turned under and twin stitched to outside of trouser as illustrated.
9.8
Hem:
a.
Two buttonholes 10cm apart and 2cm long and positioned as illustrated.
b.
Casing formed by double turning up hem 2cm wide.
c.
Cord threaded and bar tacked at inside leg.
