SPECIFICATION HISTORY
1.1
This specification was created as a result of R&D project 220
1.2
January 2008: Updated specification to the new format.
1.3
March 2008: Air force blue style information was inserted.

SCOPE
2.1
This specification defines the minimum requirements for the manufacture of a Shirt Fire
Retardant to be worn by Royal New Zealand Air Force and New Zealand Army personnel.
2.2
If the contractor desires to alter the design, material, components or manufacturing
techniques of an item; written details, together with appropriate samples, are to be
forwarded to NZDF’s agent. The request only becomes authorised on issue of a
Specification Variation Permit.

PACKAGING, MARKING & DELIVERY
3.1
Packaging, marking and delivery shall be in accordance with the terms of the contract.
3.2
Items need to be individually bagged and bar-coded.

INSPECTION
4.1
Inspection shall be carried out in accordance with the terms of the contract.

USE OF SPECIFICATION
5.1
This specification is to be used for Defence contracts only and is to be returned to NZDF’s
agent when an amendment is issued and at the end of each contract. Use of this
specification for other than Defence contracts may result in legal action.

DESIGN
6.1
One piece collar has flap with hook and pile tape attachment for closure.
6.2
Hoop on pile tabs partial slide fastener centre front closure.
6.3
Single front vertical rank slide.
6.4
Concealed vertical internal chest pockets with slide fastener closure.
6.5
Sleeve elbow reinforcement patches.
6.6
Long 2 piece sleeve, buttoned cuff.
6.7
Left breast pen loop.

MATERIALS
7.1
Contractor Supplied Materials: The following items shall be supplied by the contractor or
an alternative could be sourced and used only if approved in writing by NZDF’s agent:
a.
Cloth: 93% Aramid fibre, 5% Kevlar fibre and 2% Anti-static fibre.

Disruptive patterned material (DPM), 2/1 twill weave for NZ Army style.
(2)
Blue for NZ Air Force style.
b.
Buttons: Sixteen 27 ligne, four hole, saucer shape, urea.
c.
Slide Fastener: 5 coil, 45 cm long, one way, open ended, colour to match.
d.
Thread: Polyester or polyester/cotton, khaki, as per current commercial practice.
e.
Thread: Fire retardant thread. Colour shall be of a matching shade to that of the
base material.

SEWING
8.1
Stitch Type:
a.
Over lock: All raw edges.
b.
Twin Stitch / Flat Fell: Sleeve.
c.
Lock Stitch: Remaining seams.
8.2
Seam Allowance: 6 mm for rank slide and 1 cm for remainder.

8.3
Buttons: To be double sewn through all four holes.
8.4
Finish: Cleanly finished, free of stains with all loose threads removed. All raw edges
shall be over locked, or turned under.
8.5
Top Stitching: All must be evenly stitched, with no breaks in the line of stitching. Back
tacking must be clean and straight. Tension on the machine must be set correctly, so as
not to create any roped or fluted edges; short, long, loose or tight stitches.

MANUFACTURE
9.1
Collar and Stand:
a.
One piece collar, top stitched 6mm from edge.
b.
Attached to shirt neck and edge stitched.
c.
Self fabric tab inserted into left centre front collar edge.
d.
Hook and pile tape attached to allow variable positioning Annex B.
9.2
Fronts:
a.
Yolk seam top stitched 6mm from edge.
b.
Welt pocket concealed, attached to right front with right half top stitched 2mm from
edge.
c.
Left half of slide fastener attached to left side the top stitched 7cm from centre
front.
d.
Slide fastener facings turned over upon themselves and top stitched 6mm from
edge.
e.
Buttonholes 2.5cm long and set back 1 cm from left front edge.
f.
Hook and pile tape sewn at intervals to register with corresponding hook and pile
tape when slide fastener is closed.
9.3
Internal Chest Pockets:
a.
Pocket welt measures 3.5cm wide and 20.5cm long in size large and graded
across the size range if required.
b.
Attached securely to shirt by edge stitching 1 mm from edge with bar tacks at end
of stitching.
c.
Pocket bag lock stitched and edges over locked
d.
Buttonhole 2.5cm long and set across 1.5cm from centre front edge.
e.
Slide fastener inserted as per sample.
9.4
Rank Slide:
a.
Centre front vertically positioned on edge of yolk seam.
b.
Top stitched 1mm from edge.

Distance between attachment and neckline seam to measure 16cm. Measurement
is for size large and should be graded accordingly across the size range.
d.
Buttonhole concealed by turn over.
e.
Button attached securely 13cm down from centre front yolk seam. Measurement is
for size large and should be graded accordingly across the size range.
9.5
Sleeves:
a.
Top stitch sleeve and arm hole seams.
b.
Cuffs attached and edge stitched.
c.
Tab edge stitched and twin needled to secure to cuff.
d.
Buttons positioned as 10.5cm and 15.5cm back from buttonhole. Buttonhole 2.5cm
long.

Patches: Positioned on sleeve and twin needled.

Hem: Turned under 2.5cm wide and stitched.
