Request for Official Information
LG26-0002 – Wānaka Mount Aspiring Road Safety
Dear Mitch,
Thank you for your request for information held by the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC). On
29 December 2025 you requested the following information under the Local Government Official
Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA):
1. Please provide all information relating to cyclist accidents, deaths, crashes, and safety for
the stretch of road between Wānaka and Glendhu Bay.
2. Include any documents that Council may hold in relation to considering banning cyclists on
that road (given the accident earlier this year).
QLDC RESPONSE
In response to your request, we consulted with the QLDC Property and Infrastructure Team.
Decision to refuse information
Council has good reason under section 17(e) of the LGOIMA for refusing the information requested.
We consider it is necessary to refuse the requested information on the basis of the following grounds:
• Section 17(e) – that the document alleged to contain the information requested does not exist
or, despite reasonable efforts to locate it, cannot be found.
Section 17(e) of the LGOIMA provides that a local authority is not required to provide information that
does not exist or cannot be found despite reasonable efforts. This ensures that the absence of
information is not due to negligence but reflects its genuine non-existence.
1. Please provide all information relating to cyclist accidents, deaths, crashes, and safety for
the stretch of road between Wānaka and Glendhu Bay.
The information you have requested is publicly accessible v
ia Waka Kotahi's open data portal. We
have attached th
e Crash Analysis System (CAS) statistical report relating to the stretch of road
between Wānaka and Glendhu Bay.
We note that there may be time delays in data being entered into the New Zealand Transport Agency
(NZTA) Crash Analysis System. Should you require more granular reporting or the most current
dataset, we suggest contacting NZTA directly at
[email address]
Please note that the enclosed link will expire on 11 February 2026, 5:39 PM (UTC+12:00) Auckland,
Wellington.
2. Include any documents that Council may hold in relation to considering banning cyclists on
that road (given the accident earlier this year).
In response to your request, QLDC searched its email archives for relevant correspondence dated
between 1 January 2025 and 31 December 2025. Two separate searches were undertaken:
1. Emails containing both the terms ‘cycle ban’ and ‘Glendhu Bay’. This search returned no
results within the scope of your request.
2. Emails containing both the terms ‘cycle ban’ and ‘Wānaka Mt Aspiring Road’. This search
returned no results within the scope of your request.
As a local authority, we are committed to fulfilling our obligation to provide access to information that
we hold. However, pursuant to Section 17(e) of the LGOIMA, we are unable to release information
that either does not exist or cannot be found despite our reasonable efforts.
