Dear Sam
Extension of time to respond to request made under the Official Information Act 1982
Thank you for your email of 3 January 2026 requesting the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
Please provide information regarding telecommunications infrastructure along State
Highways in the Wel ington region:
- Fiber optic routes along state highway corridors
- Sites with ITS equipment (cameras, sensors, VMS)
- Current connectivity providers and general service arrangements
- Any planned infrastructure expansions in the next 24 months
Please provide all currently held information related to the tendering and selection of
providers for connectivity solutions delivered to roadside assets in the Wellington Region.
This includes cameras, sensors of any kind and traffic management systems.
Include information relating to tender selection process decisions, how tender
requirements were met, and contract values.
Please provide detailed information related to the cost and number of 4G/5G, Fibre and
Fixed Wireless connections, including those delivered via internal/NZTA or crown
infrastructure.
Please provide information for connectivity contracts and infrastructure deployed from
2020 to present. This should include:
- Current active contracts and systems
- Recent procurement decisions and tender processes
- Technology choices made in the era when LEO satellite and 5G options became
available
If this timeframe would result in an overly burdensome response, please prioritise:
- Current active contracts (who provides connectivity now, at what cost)
- Most recent tender process (last 2-3 years) showing how providers were selected
I'm primarily interested in understanding what connectivity solutions support Wel ington
region roadside assets today and how those decisions were made.

This letter is to advise you that NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is extending the 20
working days available to respond to your request, as allowed for under section 15A of the Act.
We require an additional 5 working days and wil send you a response on or before 20 February
2026.
The deadline is being extended as the consultations necessary to make a decision on your
request are such that a thorough response cannot reasonably be made within the original 20-
working-day limit.
Under section 28 of the Act, you have the right to complain to the Ombudsman about the
extension. More information about the Ombudsman is available online at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
If you would like to discuss the extension with NZTA, please email the Ministerial Services team
via email to [email address].
Yours sincerely
Caitlin McInnarney
