I refer to your request received by Hon Mark Mitchell’s office on 22 December 2025,
which was transferred to Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage on 23
December 2025, regarding the appointment of Duane Kale to the Sport and
Recreation New Zealand (Sport NZ) Board. Your request has been considered under
the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). You requested the following information:
•
How public nominations were called for and on what platforms e.g. govt.jobs
website and a copy of any advertisement.
•
The number of applications received from the public and from nominating
agencies such as Te Puni Kōkiri or Ministry for Women.
•
The number of candidates shortlisted and interviewed.
•
A copy of the appointment letter, with personal information removed.
Appointments to the Sport NZ Board are made by the Minister for Sport and
Recreation in accordance with the Crown Entities Act 2004 and the Sport and
Recreation Act 2002.
Public nominations for this appointment were open between 5 and 30 June 2025.
The role was advertised via:
• The Institute of Directors New Zealand
• Appoint Better Boards
• Community Governance Aotearoa
• The Ministry’s social media channels.
For this appointment process, 12 nominations were received from the public, two
from the National Party, and five from New Zealand First. Four candidates were
shortlisted and interviewed.
