Thank you for your email of 20 December 2025 to the Charter School Agency (the Agency)
requesting the following information:
I am requesting a list of the 17 successful charter school applications for the charter schools
that have been accepted and that have opened or will be opened throughout 2026.

Reference to these have been made on the Charter Schools Agency website

If the full set of applications is unable to be released, a subset of these will also be
acceptable.

Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
The Agency has published a list of all charter schools that have opened or will be opening
throughout 2026 on our website at the following link:
https://www.charterschools.govt.nz/charter-schools/
I am therefore refusing your request for a list of successful charter school applications under
section 18(d) of the Act, as the information requested is publicly available.
Since the date of your request, three additional schools have been announced as opening in 2026.
I am releasing a subset of all 20 successful applications, attached as Appendix A. Please note,
some information has been withheld under the following sections of the Act:
•  9(2)(a), to protect the privacy of natural persons.
•  9(2)(b)(ii), to protect information where the making available of the information would be
likely unreasonably to prejudice the commercial position of the person who supplied or who
is the subject of the information.

Please refer to the Appendix A Document Table below for an overview of the applications, along
with my decision on release.
As required under section 9(1) of the Act, I have considered the public interest in releasing the
information withheld. I do not consider the public interest considerations favouring the release of
this information are sufficient to outweigh the need to withhold it at this time.
The Agency has provided you with a subset of applications, per the wording of your request. If
there are other applications you are interested in, it remains open to you to submit a further request
for those specific applications.
Thank you again for your email. You have the right to ask an Ombudsman to review my decision
on your request, in accordance with section 28 of the Act. You can do this by writing to
[email address] or to Office of the Ombudsman, PO Box 10152, Wellington 6143.
