Dear Mr Stoneley
I refer to your email of 11 January 2016, in which you queried the University’s response to your request of 4
November 2015 for information about students sitting assessments at the University of Auckland in te reo
Māori. The University’s response fol ows.
I have reason to believe that your response is not accurate. It is my understanding that there are multiple
instances where students have sat assessments in Te Reo Maori at the University of Auckland where the
language of instruction was English.
As stated in the University’s response of 4 November 2015, the University has no record of requests by
University of Auckland students to sit assessments in te reo Māori where the language of instruction is
English. Further, the University has no record of students sitting assessments in te reo Māori where the
language of instruction is English. I note that the University does not normal y retain student examination
scripts or assessments (save for those theses and dissertations held in the Library).
This may constitute a refusal of your request under s 18(e) and/or s 18(g) of the Official Information Act. You
have the right to seek an investigation and review of the refusal of a request for official information by way
of a complaint to an Ombudsman under s 28(3) of the Official Information Act.
Yours sincerely
Rebecca Ewert
General Counsel
