Official Information Act request dated 11 December 2025
We refer to your email dated 11 December 2025 requesting information under the
Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). Answers to your request are set out below.
Request 1: Does Television New Zealand Limited have a DEI plan? If yes can I see a
copy?
Response 1: Yes, TVNZ has a DEI Plan. Our FY26 plan has not yet been through the
relevant internal approvals process so cannot yet be publicly released. However, in
accordance with the Act’s principle of availability, and to assist in answering your
question, we have set out below the three core areas that are the focus of our DEI
plan:
1. Develop inclusive leaders: focussing on developing our leaders so they live
everyday principles of inclusivity.
2. Build diversity in leadership: focussing on developing Māori & Pasifika leaders.
3. Tap into different pools of talent: building partnerships with organisations that
support DEI to support bringing more diversity into TVNZ.
Request 2: Has Television New Zealand Limited staff undertaken any LGBTQIA+
education or training? If yes, how many staff and can I see copies?
Response 2: TVNZ provides LGBTQIA+ education and training through its partnership
with Pride Pledge. TVNZ also has an internal DEI committee that regularly runs
events/education across TVNZ. We do not keep attendance records of these training
events.
Request 3: Does Television New Zealand Limited use, in any way, intersection? If yes
can I see a copy?
TVNZ does not use intersection.
Request 4: How does Television New Zealand Limited decide whether to run, or not,
stories about LGBTQIA+ issues? Do you have a person vetting 'trans stories' or is there
a process trans stories must go through? If a process can I see a copy?
Response 4: Subjects for news stories are selected for newsworthiness by
experienced journalists and TVNZ’s editorial team in accordance with TVNZ’s Editorial
Standards (publicly available on our website). In addition, TVNZ adheres to the
Broadcasting Standards established under the Broadcasting Act 1989. There is no
special process for “trans stories”.
Request 5: During the Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshul (aka Posie Parker) visit, in 2023,
Television New Zealand Limited described her as ‘anti-trans’, rather than 'pro women'.
I also note Television New Zealand Limited called the planned 'let women speak' an
anti-trans protest, rather than an opportunity for women to share their thoughts with
each other. So is Kel ie-Jay Keen-Minshull anti-trans? Were those people attending the
let women speak event protesters?
Response 5: This is not a request for Official Information.
Request 6: Looking at the overall coverage of 'trans issues' by Television New Zealand
Limited its obvious Television New Zealand Limited have picked a side. Therefore what
is a woman? Can you change your sex? Is sex a binary? And what is a detransitioner?
Response 6: This is not a request for Official Information.
Request 7: I also note you have not run ANY stories about the two young
detransitioners, Issy and Zara (links below). Given they have both talked openly about
the MANY FAILINGS and PROBLEMS with the current system of healthcare for gender
dysphoric children, why has Television New Zealand Limited completely ignored their
stories? Is inappropriate healthcare for mental y ill children seen by Television New
Zealand Limited as unimportant? If yes why, if no why not?
Response 7: In respect of the first part of this request, please see Response 4. The
second part is not a request for Official Information.
Request 8: Can Television New Zealand Limited please explain why the number of
children on puberty blockers has gone from 137 in 2010 to 791 in 2024? Or why the
number of girls on puberty blockers has gone from less than ten in 2010 to 515 last
year? (figures are from Pharmac). If you can't answer those two questions how about
- does gender transition lead to better psychological outcomes for children? No doubt
you wil avoid this question so instead is a boy who undertakes gender transition then
a girl?
Response 8: This is not a request for Official Information.
Request 9: I note Television New Zealand Limited is a supporter of Pride Pledge. What
commitments has Television New Zealand Limited made to be a part of this pledge?
Can I see a copy of your Pride Pledge?
2
Response 9: TVNZ has been a member of Pride Pledge since 2024. The Pride Pledge
is a values-based commitment that TVNZ takes to demonstrate our dedication to the
safety, visibility and inclusion of the rainbow members of our community and
workforce, both internally and external y. This is a partnership with Pride Pledge (the
organisation) that supports us with access to resources, services and support. There
is no specific Pride Pledge to provide as a copy.
We trust the above information assists.
If you are dissatisfied with this response section 28 of the Act provides you with the
right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman in order to seek an investigation and
review.
Yours sincerely,
