OIA: GEMS-46103 – Notice of Vacancy in the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand
I refer to your email of 1 December 2025 to the Minister of Education, Hon Erica Stanford, which
was transferred to the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) on 2 December 2025, requesting the
following information:
1. How you called for public nomination and
2. On what platform you have call for public nominations e.g. gazette website.
3. A copy of your ad and pay rate as well.
4. Also, how many applications you have received from the public and
5. How many you have received from other nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry
of Women etc for your role.
6. How many you have shortlisted and
7. How many you have interviewed.
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) and numbered
for the purposes of responding.
In response to
parts one to three of your request, the call for public nominations was the Gazette
Notice, which served as the official platform for publishing the vacancy and informing the public of
the nomination process. This can be found here: https://gazette.govt.nz/notice/id/2025-go6648.
The Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (the Council) is classified as a Group 4 Level 1
entity under the Cabinet Fees Framework. Fees are set at $800 a day for Council members, with
an expected commitment of 15 days per annum.

With regard to
parts four to seven of your request, I can confirm that seven applications were
received. Two candidates were shortlisted and informally interviewed. Nominations were not
sought from nominating agencies for this vacancy.
The composition of the Council is set out in the Education and Training Act 2020, which was
amended in November 2025 to provide for one additional Ministerial appointee on the board, and
one fewer elected sector representatives (the representative for teacher educators). This was the
reason for the vacancy.
