Official Information Act request: appointments and tribunal Memberships
Thank you for your email of 1 December 2025 to the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry),
seeking follow up information under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act), relating to an
earlier request you made (Ref: 125837). Specifical y, you asked three questions which I
have set out below along with a response to each.
1. I noted "Ms Shaw has now retired from the Immigration and Protection Tribunal (the
Tribunal) and the review of the other two members is currently under consideration by the
Associate Minister of Justice, who has delegated authority for appointments to the Tribunal. "
Could you now provide an updated list of the tribunal members, as well as any updates
regarding the review you mentioned with the Associate Minister of Justice?
A copy of the current list of members is attached at Document 1. The Associate Minister has
not yet made a decision on further appointment or reappointment options.
2. I noted "A review of several members of the Real Estate Agents Authority is currently
under consideration. Nominations for these positions were sought from members of the
coalition caucuses."
Could you please let me know how many nominations have been received, how many have
been shortlisted, and how many candidates have been interviewed? Additionally, could you
clarify how the Minister called for nominations? If the request was sent by email, I would like
to request a copy of the email that was sent to the members of the coalition caucuses.”
Seven nominations were received. The Minister made the candidate selection on the papers.
I do not have a copy of the final version of the letter sent to caucus and coalition colleagues,
however I attach a draft version which wil not be too dissimilar to the final (save for the
inclusion of a date by which nominations were to be received) as Document 2.
3. I noted "Several member positions on the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers
Disciplinary Tribunal have now expired. Action on these positions has been deferred pending
completion of the review of the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson appointments. The
review of the member positions wil commence shortly."
Could you please provide an update on the progress of the review for the Chairperson and
Deputy Chairperson appointments? Has the review of the member positions begun, and if
so, what stage is it currently at? Additionally, wil there be a call for public nominations?
Both the Chairperson (Ms Dale Clarkson) and Deputy Chairperson (Dr John Adams) have
been appointed for further terms of two years expiring in August 2027. The review of the
membership of the tribunal wil commence shortly and no decisions have yet been taken
regarding the process.
