Neurodevelopmental Disorders - Call Taker
Interaction

This Knowledge Base provides support for recognising and appropriately responding to
neurodivergent callers.
A neurodevelopmental disorder is not a mental illness, but a neurological difference in the way
the brain experiences and interacts with the world, such as Autism, ADHD, and FASD.
Identifying a neurodivergent caller and responding appropriately can support constructive
dialogue and help avoid unnecessary escalation. The values of professionalism, respect,
empathy, and valuing diversity are especially relevant in these interactions.
Information on interacting with members of the public with autism can also be found at
AutismNZ.
