Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 27 November 2025 in which you
asked:
1. Current Police Rank Structure and Designation: A comprehensive, up-to-date list of al
formal sworn and non-sworn ranks and designations currently used within the New Zealand
Police, from Recruit/Constable up to the Commissioner.
2. Rank Abbreviations: For every rank or designation provided in response to point 1, please
provide the official, common, or internal abbreviation (e.g., Constable = Cst; Sergeant = Sgt)
used in Police documentation, operational communications, and internal systems.
3. Staffing Headcount by Rank: A breakdown of the ful -time equivalent (FTE) and/or
headcount (please specify which metric is used) of active Police personnel for each rank and
designation listed in response to point 1, as at the most recent practicable date (e.g., 30
September 2024 or 31 October 2024).
If any part of this request is refused, please cite the specific section of the OIA that permits
the withholding of the information. I request that the information be provided in an electronic
format (e.g., PDF or a spreadsheet) if possible.
Police’s current ranks and designations are shown in the below table. The current active FTE (as of 3
December 2025) is also shown. Please note that recruits are not counted towards constable FTE
numbers until they graduate from training.
