Thank you for your email on 24 November 2025, asking Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora for
the following under the Official Information Act 1982 (the OIA):
“how many people are currently on the waitlist for an MRI scan in the Auckland region, as
well as in South Auckland specifically.
the ethnic background of those on the waitlist, as well as what the average wait time is?”
Response
For the sake of clarity I wil address each question in turn.
how many people are currently on the waitlist for an MRI scan in the Auckland region, as
well as in South Auckland specifically.
As at 23 November 2025 there were 8,132 people on the MRI waitlist in the Northern region (which
includes Te Tai Tokerau, Waitemata, Te Toka Tumai and Counties Manukau districts).
Specifically, there were 2,321 people on the waitlist for Counties Manukau district.
the ethnic background of those on the waitlist, as well as what the average wait time is?
The ethnic breakdown of those on the waitlist is as follows:
• Māori: 1,154
• Pacific: 1,022
• Other: 5,956
The average time from referral to report for the region was 60 days for the week ending
23 November 2025.
