What is the status update on the digital driver licence? How far away are we?
NZTA is currently co-designing the solution in collaboration with Austroads, the association representing
Australian and New Zealand transport agencies, with a final assessment expected in September 2025.

The most significant hurdle right now are the legislative changes required to enable digital licensing. This
work is being led by the Ministry of Transport.

government ensuring these wil go through smoothly?
To enable the rollout of digital driver licences. NZTA is working closely with central government agencies,
including the Department of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Transport, to ensure the regulatory

framework supports integration with New Zealand’s digital identity ecosystem. This collaborative
approach is designed to ensure the solution is secure, future-proofed, and aligned with the
Government’s broader digital transformation goals - helping to ensure a smooth and effective
implementation.
How much wil it cost to implement the digital driver licence?
At this stage, the cost to implement the Digital Driver Licence (DDL) is still being finalised and has not yet

been confirmed.
What I can say is that the DDL is being co-designed with our Australian counterparts through Austroads,
and we’re taking a careful, phased approach to ensure the solution is secure, future-proofed, and aligned

with New Zealand’s digital identity ecosystem. This includes working closely with the Ministry of
Transport and the Department of Internal Affairs to ensure the necessary legislative and technical
foundations are in place.
We’l be in a better position to confirm implementation costs once the final solution has been assessed
and endorsed by NZTA’s Executive Leadership Team and Board later this year
Australia already has the digital drivers licence underway. Why were they able to do it and we
can’t? Why are we so far behind?

Some states in Australia have moved faster, but New Zealand is taking a deliberate approach to ensure
our DDL is secure, future-proofed, and aligned with our digital identity ecosystem.
