Dear Jacob,
Official Information Act request: Tough on gangs advert
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request, received on 22 November
2025. You requested:
1. “Verbatim prompts used to depict the Mongrel Mob in a recent “tough on gangs”
National Party advertisement shown on Facebook throughout November (first seen
21/11/25).
2. Platform used to create the likeness of Police and the Mongrel Mob.”
These videos were produced by the National Party Leader’s Office. Only materials that are
held by a public service agency, a Minister of the Crown in their official capacity, or a
specified organisation are classed as official information under the Act. Information that is
held in any other capacity, for example, as the Leader of the New Zealand National Party, as
a Member of Parliament or as a private individual, is not official information and falls outside
the scope of the Act.
As the questions you have raised relate to National Party information it is not a request for
official information.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision under
section 28(3) of the Act.
Yours sincerely,
Cameron Burrows
Chief of Staff
