1d. Present research/professional speciality
Trace organic chemistry. Using mass spectrometry to analyse and quantify trace levels of chemical
compounds, particularly toxins and carcinogens, in food and water.
I am responsible for the Mass Spectrometry suite at ESR Christchurch.
I am used by IANZ (International Accreditation New Zealand) as a Technical Expert for audits of other
laboratories.
I have led several projects for the Ministry of Primary Industries related to assessing the prevalence
of toxins or carcinogens in the diet of New Zealanders, including conducting exposure assessments to
determine risk to individuals and compare with international data.
I’m currently the ESR project leader providing analysis of illicit drugs in wastewater to the National
Drug Intelligence Bureau section of the New Zealand Police. This is a world-leading programme, and
I’m working on opportunities to leverage off this resource for other research projects.
