Thank you for your request of 17 November 2025 to Fire and Emergency New Zealand requesting 
the following information under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA): 
 
•  I am doing a survey on just how many deaths are recorded in commercial properties over 
the last 25 years. Is it possible to separate out (office/retail/industrial) and accommodation 
(i.e hotels,motels, backpackers etc). 
 
Please find attached, as an Appendix to this response, the requested information. Please note, 
Fire and Emergency only records fatalities when a deceased person is observed at the time of our 
attendance. We do not always record when someone dies after we attended. Therefore, it is 
possible there have been other fatalities but we have not recorded them.
