Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 2 December 2025.
Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you.
You requested:
What input was provided for the development of the government's
New Zealand Government Sport Diplomacy Strategy?
Police then asked for clarification regarding your request, and you replied:
The Police Sport website clearly indicates that NZ Police provide funding to the
sub-entity. Media reports indicate Police support and variety of international
events. Police media includes photographs of New Zealand Police in uniform.
Events include those run under the auspices of international organisations
comprised of national police organisations. It is a reasonable expectation that the
combination of funding and official attendance indicates a formal program that is
consistent with the sports diplomacy strategy.
Your request was then amended to:
What was the Police contribution to development of Sport New Zealand’s
Strategy?
Police Sport Incorporated (Police Sport) is an organisation to which employees of the
New Zealand Police are encouraged to belong and which has an office at the Royal New
Zealand Police College.
Police Sport encourages, promotes and coordinates Police Sport members’ participation
in sports and recreation.
Police Sport is recognised by the New Zealand Police as the sport entity to represent all
aspects of sport and recreation for the New Zealand Police.
Police Sport (and therefore the New Zealand Police) has never been asked to, nor have
we contributed to the development of Sport New Zealand’s Strategy.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this
decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
