Official information request regarding economics course grades
We refer to your request for information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act), dated 14 November 2025:
“Could I please be provided with
1.the grade distribution of how many students achieved each letter grade
2. The mean/median and maximum percentage grades
And 3. Any grade scaling decisions made for such courses and justification
behind such decisions.
For the below courses only for 2025 only.
ECON201
QUAN201
ECON202
ECON303”
The requested information is presented in four separate tables below, each accompanied
by a note explaining the scaling decisions made. Please note that, in accordance with
section 9(2)(a) of the OIA, some information has been withheld where the grade count is
fewer than four to protect the privacy of natural persons.

ECON201: The raw scores have been rescaled by adding four points to each student’s result.
This approach is consistent with practices applied in previous years. The adjustment offers a
more accurate reflection of students’ performance throughout the trimester and ensures a
balanced grade distribution.

QUAN201: The raw scores have been rescaled using the formula: Scaled Score=(Raw
Score×1.1)-5. This adjustment widened the grade distribution, raising grades for passing
students while lowering grades for those already failing, without affecting the overall fail
rate. Scaling was applied because the assessments were more demanding than intended and
the original distribution was overly compressed.

ECON202: Grades were scaled down by 4.5 points under the school moderation process for
two reasons: the increased use of AI by students in assignments has led to greater attention
on invigilated assessments than in the past, and the grade distribution was relatively high
because tests and exams were easier than in previous years. These adjustments help maintain
fairness and ensure grading remains consistent across the years.

ECON303: The raw scores have been rescaled using the formula: Scaled Score=(Raw
Score×1.2)-10. This adjustment widened the grade distribution, raising grades for passing
students while lowering grades for those already failing, without affecting the overall fail
rate. Scaling was applied because the assessments were more demanding than intended and
the original distribution was overly compressed.
