Dear Harvey
OIA 25.373 – Grade Distributions
I refer to the Official Information Act (the Act) request dated 8 November 2025 regarding grade distributions
of nine courses. You have specifical y requested:
•
I would like to request grade breakdowns for the fol owing Computer Science, Software Engineering,
Mathematics, and Statistics courses:
2024:
•
SENG201-24S1
•
COSC262-24S1
•
STAT201-24S1
•
COSC261-24S1
•
MATH201-24S1
•
MATH202-24S2
•
COSC265-24S2
•
ENCE260-24S2
•
STAT202-24S2
For the courses listed above, please provide the fol owing data:
(1) The final grade distribution for the course (broken down by letter grade, e.g. A+, A, A-, .etc.)
(2) The number of students who completed the course
(3) The mean and median final marks for the course (percentage)
Where there are five or less students in a particular grade, the actual number is not provided, rather a range of
less than or equal to five (≤5). Where there is only one particular grade in a course that has less than or equal
to five, the total number of students in the course has not been provided. This is to protect the individual’s
privacy under s 9(2)(a) of the Act. It is in the public interest that individuals are not identifiable when providing
information about grades.
Where applicable, the options of Pass, Fail or Withdraw have also been included in addition to the standard
grading scale. For further information about the grading scale at UC, please see
here. To get the information
on percentage final marks from each course would take substantial collation and research, as this would
include contacting the course coordinator for each course separately across different departments. This is
therefore refused under s 18 (f) of the Act. What is held in a more central location is mean and median Grade
Point Average for each course, therefore this is what has been provided.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about
how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely
