Dear James
Thank you for your email of 7 November 2025 to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment
(MBIE) requesting, under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), the fol owing information:
Please provide me with the fol owing data from 2020 - 2025 ytd.
How many small businesses were in operation? Can this please be provided as companies,
partnerships, sole traders, and total?
How many new companies were incorporated?
How many companies closed/were removed from the companies register?
How many companies were incorporated and how many were closed by industry type (eg
accommodation and food service, construction, mining, retail trade etc.)
Please find attached the documentation relevant to your request.
The attached documentation includes tabs detailing the fol owing statistics:
• Balance of entities –the number of registered entities for companies, sole traders and
partnerships, at the end of each year and at 31 October 2025.
• Company registrations and removals – a distinct count of companies that were registered and
companies that were removed each year and year to date at 31 October 2025.
• Company registrations by industry – these statistics are by major industry group and as a
company can have more than once industry code, they may be counted in more than one major
industry group; therefore, these numbers wil not reconcile with the registrations on the sheet
‘Company registrations and removals’.
• Company removals by industry – these statistics are by major industry group. As a company can
have more than once industry code, they may be counted in more than one major industry group;
therefore, these numbers wil not reconcile with the removals on the sheet ‘Company
registrations and removals’.
Please note the fol owing caveats:
1. We do not identify ‘small’ businesses.
2. We cannot confirm whether a company is ‘in operation’; we can only provide information on the
registered or removed status.
3. Industry code is voluntary data, so not al companies provide a code. Companies without an
industry code are recorded under the industry group ‘Unknown’.
