Position Specification
Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake
On behalf of the Minister of Finance, the Treasury is inviting applications from people
bringing governance capability and fresh and diverse perspective to Natural Hazards
Commission – Toka Tū Ake (NHC) Board.
Applicants must have the necessary capabilities that enable them to meet the
requirements of a director in terms of the Crown Entities Act 2004 and other relevant
legislation. They must be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skil s, attributes,
behaviours and personal qualities critical for organisational stewardship and required for
particular roles on the board.

Ideal candidates wil have some or all of the following skil s and experience:
•
strong commercial governance capabilities
•
senior executive level experience in the commercial insurance sector
•
enterprise risk management experience
•
capital management and investment experience
•
demonstrated ability to chair an audit and risk or capital management commit ee
Commitment
The Board has approximately 10 meetings per year, typically comprising eight face-to-
face meetings and two over teams. Board meetings usually run for six to seven hours
and include two strategy days each year. Board sub commit ees typically meet a
minimum of four times throughout the year, normally outside of the board meeting days.
Remuneration
Fees for Commissioners are set under the Cabinet Fees Framework. Commissioners
receive annual fees of $60,930.
Closing date and introduction
Candidates are asked to provide a cover letter to support their application. This may
include details on their values (tikanga Rangatira), interest and motivations for this role,
and any personal attributes, strengths and diverse perspectives that they think would
contribute to performance on this Commit ee. In their cover letter (preferably no longer
than two pages), they should provide specific examples from their recent career
experience to il ustrate how they meet the capabilities sought.

NHC is a statutory Crown entity governed by the Crown Entities Act, which defines its
operational framework, and the Natural Hazards Insurance Act 2023 (NHI Act), which
sets out its role and functions. NHC aims to reduce the impact on people and property
when natural disasters occur, by protecting homeowners and helping them recover
from natural hazard events.
The Statement of Intent 2024–2028 sets out NHC’s priorities: reducing natural hazard
risks and building resilience, ensuring readiness for future events, managing fiscal risks
through risk financing expertise, and supporting homeowner recovery by working with
Natural Disaster Response Model insurers to manage claims effectively.
