Thank you for your Official Information Act request to the Department of Conservation, received on
31 October 2025, in which you asked for:
“1. I would like all correspondence, reports, documents, meeting minutes, file notes, etc,
you have on record regarding the proposal to develop 4 open cast mines, underground
mine, industrial cyanide processing plant, permanent waste tailings dam, engineered land
forms and miners caravan park in the Bendigo Ophir - Dunstan Mountains area by
Matakanui Gold / Santana Minerals. Regardless of whether they are associated with fast
track consenting or any other process.
2. From September 15, 2025 until present day.”
This letter is to advise you that we are extending the 20 working day period to respond to your
request, as allowed under section 15A(1) of the Official Information Act 1982. We require an
additional 25
days to respond to your request. We wil send you a response no later than 26 January
2026, earlier if possible.
The extension of time is necessary as it necessitates a search through a large quantity of information
and meeting the original time limit would unreasonably interfere with the operations of the
Department, and consultations necessary to make a decision on the request mean that a proper
response to the request cannot reasonably be made within the original time limit.
Please also note the days in the period from 25 December to 15 January are not counted as
‘working days’ under the OIA. More information
on this is available on the Ombudsman’s website
here:
OIA and LGOIMA requests over the holiday period | Ombudsman New Zealand. You have the right, under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act to make a complaint to an
Ombudsman about the extension. If you wish to discuss this response to your request, please
contact
[email address].
