Official Information Act request: Public Defence Service salaries 
 
Thank you for your email of 21 October 2025 to the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry), 
requesting information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), regarding salaries in 
the Public Defence Service (PDS). Specifically, you requested:  
 
Can I please have the Salary bands for all lawyers employed by the Public Defence 
Service from supervised provider to PAL1-PAL4 lawyers.  
 
Please can the average salary for supervised providers to PAL4 lawyers be broken 
down nationally, and per PDS office. 
 
In response to part one of your request, please refer to Table 1 below, which lists the current 
remuneration bands applicable to PDS employees. Table 1a shows the salary bands for 
PDS lawyer positions by title, including supervised provider to PAL1-PAL4 lawyers.  
 
In response to part two of your request, please refer to Table 2 and 2a below, which shows 
the average salary bands for PDS lawyer positions, broken down by position and location 
respectively.  
 
For all tables, please refer to the table notes which are located after Table 2a.
