Dear Poppy,
Official Information request – Average GPA by Paper
I refer to your clarified request for official information of 5 November 2025 (following clarification
of your original request dated 17 October 2024) in which you have requested the following:
•
Average student GPA awarded for all papers at bachelor’s level from the 2024 year.
Under the Official Information Act 1982 (
Act) the University of Waikato (
University) has considered
your request and responds as follows.
The calculation of a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) is not information held by the University.
Crown agencies under the Act are not required to create new information to respond to an official
information request. By way of explanation, the University does not attribute a GPA grading system
to each student. However, the University does provide a manual calculation method (to those
students that voluntarily wish to use it) which assesses each students grades based on the type of
GPA sought. For completion purposes, the University refuses your request pursuant to section 18(e)
of the Act as the information does not exist.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
Information about how to make a complaint is available a

Yours sincerely
Jim Mercer
