Thank you for your information request dated 16 Whiringa-ā-nuku 2025
. You request was
original y sent to Te Puni Kōkiri for the following information:
“I noted, you have recently made Appointments to Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language
Commission)

May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call for public
nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. A copy of your ad as wel . Also, how many applications you
have received for each of the role from the public and how many you have received from other
nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for your role. How many you have
shortlisted and how many you have interviewed. Also, can I request to view the appointment letter
if there is one sent to the appointee. I am happy for you to remove all the personal information.”
On 30 Whiringa-ā-nuku 2025 Te Puni Kōkiri transferred your request to my office as the
information requested is more closely connected with my responsibilities as the Minister for
Māori Development.
I also received the following request for information from you dated 16 Whiringa-ā-nuku 2025:
“I noted, you have recently made Appointment to the Board of Te Mātāwai

May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call for public
nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. A copy of your ad as well. Also, how many applications you
have received for each of the role from the public and how many you have received from other
nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for your role. How many you have
shortlisted and how many you have interviewed. Also, can I request to view the appointment letter
if there is one sent to the appointee. I am happy for you to remove all the personal information.”
On the basis that the two requests were received in close succession, relate to similar subject
matter, and can be addressed more efficiently together without compromising clarity or
timeliness, both have been addressed in this single response.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the Official Information Act 1982 (
OIA
1982).
My response
Appointments to the two entities you refer to in your requests are made under Te Ture mō te
Reo Māori 2016 | Māori Language Act 2016 (
Reo Māori Act). Appointments of members to:
• Te Mātāwai are made under section 20; and
• Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori are made under section 41.
In regard to the first part of the request, you have previously made the same request in your
letter of 24 Paengawhāwhā 2025 – relating to appointments of a member to Te Mātāwai. I
responded to you on this matter on 4 Pipiri 2025

to-the-board-of-te-matawai#incoming-124361). For your reference, I have enclosed a copy of
my previous response.
I have decided to refuse this part of both requests under section 18(h) of the OIA 1982, on the
grounds that the request is frivolous or vexatious.
You have also requested the appointments letters sent to the appointees referred to in the
Gazette notices. I have decided to release to you copies of these letters. Some information has
been withheld consistent with section 9(2)(a) of the OIA 1982 to protect the privacy of natural
persons.
I trust my response satisfies your request.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this response.
