Your request for official information, reference: HNZ00101325
Thank you for your email on 16 October 2025, asking Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora for the
following under the Official Information Act 1982 (the OIA):
1) Please supply me with a breakdown of the number of Pharmacist in NZ employed or
contracted by Health NZ and their FTE. This should be expressed as the total FTE
(full time equivalent) Pharmacist and type in each of the 19 districts and then further
broken down by the full name of each specialist and their FTE. The hospital in which
they are based should be stated e.g. Middlemore or Hutt and should be the means of
categorising the data under the district heading.
2) The total population served by each hospital and by each district should be included.
Eg
Auckland district 6.7FTE Population served: 1,543,434
Middlemore 3.2FTE Population served: 454,654
Response
In response to your request, please see
Appendix One, detailing the number of pharmacists
employed across Health NZ.
Names of individuals have been withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the OIA, to protect their privacy.
I have considered the public interest in releasing the information. However, I do not consider that
this public interest outweighs the harm identified above.
In order to provide you with information as to which hospital each pharmacist is based, each
individual’s staff file would have to be manual y reviewed. Health NZ would need to divert
personnel from their core duties and allocate extra time to complete this task. As such, Health NZ
is refusing this part of your request under section 18(f) of the OIA as it involves substantial
research and collation.
I have considered whether fixing a charge for the supply of the information or extending the
timeframe for response would enable Health NZ to respond. I do not consider that either option
would remove the impact that supplying the information would have on our other operations.
Please note that this data is provisional and used for operational purposes. It has not been through
the full quality assurance process that we use before publishing data and therefore is subject to
change.
Table 2 below shows the projected resident population of each district in New Zealand, as at
30 June 2025. This data is provided to Health NZ by Stats NZ. Stats NZ use Health NZ’s former
District Health Board (DHB) boundaries to develop this data.
