Matatū Aotearoa | Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand is the professional body for kaiako
| teachers, guiding the profession across early childhood, primary, and secondary education in
both English and Māori medium settings.

frameworks.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
Matatū Aotearoa | Teaching Council of Aotearoa is seeking expressions of interest from registered
teachers with a current practising certificate to serve as members of the New Zealand Teachers’
Disciplinary Tribunal for a three-year term.
The Tribunal hears cases of serious misconduct referred by the Complaints Assessment
Committee (CAC). Each panel consists of a legal Chair and two registered teachers. Tribunal
members are responsible for reviewing case materials, attending hearings, and contributing to fair,
well-reasoned decisions that uphold the integrity of the teaching profession.
Hearings may be held in person or remotely, and domestic travel within Aotearoa may be required.
Preparation and availability are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
• Review all relevant documentation prior to hearings
• Attend hearings and contribute to decisions on conduct and penalties
• Apply principles of natural justice and maintain impartiality
• Ensure compliance with the Education and Training Act 2020 and Teaching Council Rules
2016
• Engage in respectful, collaborative decision-making with fellow panel members
• Uphold the integrity and mana of the teaching profession

• Experience in governance, disciplinary, or decision-making roles
• A strong sense of fairness and respect for the teaching profession
• Excellent communication and active listening skills
• Confidence to ask questions and challenge unclear or unsound information
• Ability to analyse complex information and contribute thoughtfully to decisions
To be considered, you will need:
• Current New Zealand teacher registration and practising certificate
• Strong competency in Tikanga Māori, Te Ao Māori, and Te Reo Māori
• Demonstrated competency, understanding and/or knowledge of Pasifika values and
cultures. Fluency in a Pasifika language is an advantage
• Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and understanding its application in schools, kura, and
early childhood settings
• Familiarity with the Code of Professional Responsibility and Ngā Paerewa
• Ability to analyse complex information and contribute to collaborative decision-making
• Confidence to ask questions and challenge unclear or unsound information
• Awareness of community perspectives, including those of whānau and tamariki
