Matatū Aotearoa | Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand is the professional body for kaiako
| teachers, guiding the profession across early childhood, primary, and secondary education in
both English and Māori medium settings.
We honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and are committed to raising the status and mana of teaching,
supporting quality leadership and practice, and strengthening our regulatory and disciplinary
frameworks.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
We are seeking expressions of interest from:
• Registered teachers with a current practising certificate, and
• Lay members (individuals who are not part of the teaching profession but bring valuable
external perspectives)
to join our Complaints Assessment Committee (CAC) Panel for a three-year term.
The CAC plays a critical role in reviewing complaints and reports related to teacher conduct and
determining appropriate outcomes. Serious misconduct cases are referred by the CAC to the
Disciplinary Tribunal.
This is a casual, on-call role. Domestic travel within Aotearoa may be required, and preparation for
meetings is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
• Review all relevant documentation in advance of hearings
• Participate in hearings and contribute to decisions on conduct and outcomes
• Apply principles of natural justice and maintain impartiality
• Engage in respectful, collaborative decision-making
• Ensure compliance with the Education and Training Act 2020 and Teaching Council Rules
2016
• Be available for hearings and associated travel across Aotearoa
He kōrero e pā ana ki a koe | About you:
We welcome applications from across Aotearoa. Hearings may be held in person or remotely.
You will ideally bring:
• Prior experience in governance, disciplinary, or decision-making roles
• A strong sense of fairness and respect for the mana of teaching
• Excellent communication and active listening skills
• Confidence to ask questions and challenge unclear or unsound information
• The ability to analyse complex information and contribute thoughtfully to decisions
To be considered, you will need:
• For professional members: Current New Zealand teacher registration and practising
certificate
• For lay members: A minimum of five years’ post-qualification experience in your field
• Strong understanding of Tikanga Māori, Te Ao Māori, and Te Reo Māori
• Demonstrated competency, understanding and/or knowledge of Pasifika values and
cultures. Fluency in a Pasifika language is an advantage
• Demonstrate a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, with lay members upholding its
principles and professional members understanding its practical application across
schools, kura, and early childhood settings
• Awareness of community perspectives, including those of whānau and tamariki
