Dear Lauren
Official Information Request
Our Ref: OIA 2025-0115
I refer to your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request received on 6 October 2025:
“Since the current Government assumed office on 27 November 2023 to the present
day:
1. How many public sector jobs have been disestablished?
2. How many disestablishments affected Māori specific roles, teams or entities such
as Māori advisors, Māori language resource teachers, Te Aka Whai Ora?
3. How many disestablishments were in the areas of health and education?
4. How many of these disestablished roles were held by Māori (by ethnicity)?
5. How many of these disestablishments were held by wāhine Māori?
Information being released -
Parts one, four and five
We do not hold the number of jobs that have been disestablished across the public sector.
However, we do hold the numbers of employees made redundant within core Public Service
departments and departmental agencies.
Noting that qualification, since the current Government assumed office on 27 November
2023 to 30 June 2025:
- 2341 Public Service employees have been made redundant
- 373 of these redundant employees were Māori
- 266 of these redundant employees were wāhine Māori.

Information does not exist - Parts two and three
Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission (the Commission) does not hold how many
disestablishments:
•
…affected Māori specific roles, teams or entities such as Māori advisors, Māori
language resource teachers, Te Aka Whai Ora
•
…were in the areas of health and education.
I am therefore refusing these parts of your request under section 18(e) of the OIA on the
grounds the information does not exist.
