•
“Thank you for your response dated 7 October 2025. Would you please detail what levies or
charges Wel ington ratepayers can expect to receive from 'Metro Water' from July 2026 and
how these levies or charges wil be calculated.”
Your request has been considered under the Local Government Of icial Information and Meetings Act
1987 (LGOIMA).
The decision confirming water charges or levies from July 2026 is the responsibility of Metro
Water. The establishment of Metro Water is in progress, with recruitment for Directors and a Chief
Executive currently being prioritised.
Metro Water is required by legislation to prepare a water services strategy. This strategy must include
the following elements, along with other required information:
“5 Water services strategy: financial matters
(2) A water services strategy must include the fol owing information for each group of water services
activities for which the water service provider is responsible:
(a) the water service provider’s intended approach to funding, revenue, and pricing, which
must include detailed information on the following for the first 3 financial years to which the
water services strategy relates:
(i) the water service provider’s intended approach to pricing the water services it
provides; and
(ii) the water service provider’s intended approach to charging consumers; and
(iii) the water service provider’s intended sources of funding and revenue:”.
Further information on the strategy requirements can be found here
: Local Government (Water
Services) Act 2025 No 42, Public Act Schedule 3 Contents of water services strategy – New Zealand
Legislation.
The Metro Water services strategy with the final pricing approach is expected to be available
approximately March 2026. Council led community consultation undertaken earlier this year identified
the predicted charges. This detail can be found in th
e consultation document, also provided to you in
IRC-9166.
