[FYI request #32407 email]
Dear Brendon
Thank you for your Official Information Act (OIA) request, received on 28 September
2025. You requested the following:
I would like to know why you always only ever offer austerity as the solution to
everything.
As it stands your request for information under the OIA does not meet the threshold for
‘official information ‘as set out in section 2 of the OIA.
Official information is information actually held in some form by an agency or Minister
of the Crown. Questions that require an agency to form an opinion or provide an
explanation, and so create new information to answer the request, is not deemed
official information under the OIA.
For your reference, the Budget and Economic Fiscal Update has been published here:
www.treasury.govt.nz/sites/default/files/2025-05/befu25-v2.pdf. This document provides an indication of what the Government’s fiscal outlook is most
likely to focus on. The update outlines the Treasury’s observations in the current
economic climate, and what we might see in the future.
Please note that this letter (with your personal details removed) may be published on
the Treasury website.
This reply addresses the information you requested. Under section 28(3) of the OIA,
you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review any decisions made under this
request.
Yours sincerely
Alastair Gilby
