Request for Information 
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request, partially transferred to 
Police by the Ministry of Justice on 24 September 2025, where you requested information 
relating to the Child Sex Offender Register. 
You asked for: 
Number of registered sex offenders currently living in the below areas; 
-Rodney District
-Whangaparāoa
-Auckland region
-Wellington region
-North Island
-South Island
The Child Protection (Child Sex Offender Government Agency Registration) Act 2016 (the 
Act) was established1 to reduce sexual reoffending against child victims by providing 
government agencies with the information needed to monitor child sex offenders in the 
community. 
The Act places restrictions on access to the Register, which limits access to information 
held under the following section: 
  Section 412 Access to the register to be restricted 
(1) The Commissioner must ensure that the register, or any part of the register, is only
accessed by a person, or a class of persons, that is authorised to do so by the
Commissioner in accordance with guidelines issued in accordance with this section.
(5) This section has effect despite any other enactment or law to the contrary.
3 Purpose 
The purpose of this Act is to establish a Child Sex Of ender Register that wil  reduce sexual reoffending against 
child victims, and the risk posed by serious child sex offenders, by— 
(a) providing government agencies with the information needed to monitor child sex offenders in the
community, including after the completion of the sentence; and
(b) providing up-to-date information that assists the Police to more rapidly resolve cases of child
sexual offending.

This means that Police cannot lawfully disclose to you any information from the Register, 
therefore your request is refused under section 18(c)(i) of the OIA, as the making 
available of the information requested would be contrary to section 41 of the Act.
