Your Official Information Act request, reference: GOV-042856
Thank you for your email of 4 September 2025, asking for the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
Please would you please provide information on District Health Board workers for their
treatment injury claims and worker deaths that occurred at DHB workplaces.
Please share the total number of DHB worker injury claims and worker deaths at the DHB
workplaces from the year 2021 onwards.
In these figures, please would you include a breakdown by DHB region for these numbers.
As your request refers to injury claims by DHB workers at DHB workplaces, we understand that you are
seeking information about work-related injuries for those workers, rather than treatment injuries. A
treatment injury would not be recorded or associated with a worker’s employment. Accordingly, we have
interpreted your entire request to be for work-related injuries.
District Health Board worker injury claims
Please find attached a spreadsheet containing the number of work-related injuries for DHB employees.
Please refer to the notes about the data in the attachment.
District Health Board employee deaths
There have been fewer than four work-related fatal claims for District Health Board employees between
1 January 2021 and 9 September 2025.
We are withholding the actual number of fatal claims and the breakdown by DHB to protect the privacy
of our clients. This decision has been made under Section 9 (2)(a) of the Act. We have considered the
public interest in making the information available and have determined that it does not outweigh the need
to protect the privacy of these individuals.
Please note that ACC cannot provide comprehensive fatality statistics as our data is collected on the
basis of claims made. Our data may not represent the total number of fatalities related to accidents for
the following reasons:
• People may not be aware they can make a claim related to an accidental death of a family
member, and therefore not every accidental death will result in an ACC claim.
• If a person who has an open claim with ACC dies of their injuries, or other causes, ACC is not
necessarily notified of this.
