Official Information request – Graduating GPA for LLB students 
I refer to your request for official information of 3 September 2025 in which you have requested the 
following information: 
•  The graduating GPA for LLB students from 2022 - 2024 
Under the Official Information Act 1982 (Act) the University of Waikato (University) has considered 
your request and responds as follows. 
The calculation of a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) is not information held by the University 
and crown agencies under the Act are not required to create new information to respond to a request.   
By  way  of  explanation,  the University  does  not attribute  a  GPA  grading  system  to  each  student.   
However, the University does provide a manual calculation method (to those students that wish to 
use  it)  which  assesses  each  students  grades  based  on  the  type  of  GPA  sought.  Accordingly,  the 
University refuses your request pursuant to section 18 (e) of the Act as the information does not 
exist. 
You  have  the  right  to  seek  an  investigation  and  review  by  the  Ombudsman  of  this  decision.
