Transfer of Industrial Hemp Regulatory Activities within Medsafe 
I am writing to inform you of an upcoming change to the administration of the industrial 
hemp framework within Medsafe.  
As of the 1st of April, activities related to industrial hemp are being transferred from the 
Medicines Control branch of Medsafe to the Regulatory Practice and Analysis (RPA) 
branch of Medsafe. 
 
As you may be aware, the RPA branch currently administers the Medicinal Cannabis 
Scheme (through the Medicinal Cannabis Agency), and the change is thought to be a 
natural reflection of the similarities between the two frameworks. 
 
The Medicines Control and RPA branches have been working hard to ensure a smooth 
transition occurs. There are no changes occurring to the regulatory requirements for 
industrial hemp and there will be no change to the licence application process itself. The 
only exception being the email address to which application forms will be submitted 
([email address]).
