Thank you for your email on 28 August, asking Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora for the
following under the Official Information Act 1982 (the OIA):
1. The number of mental health jobs that ambulance responding to each year in New Zealand
1a. With Police
1b. Ambulance only
2. The number of mental health jobs that Wellington Free Ambulance responds to each year
3. The number of mental health jobs that St John responds to each year
4. The amount of funding that is put into helping with mental health each year
Response
Wellington Free Ambulance have advised Health NZ that they attended 2,446 mental health
incidents in the 2024/25 year. Hato Hone St John attended 15,294 in the same period.
In response to parts 1a and 1b of your request, neither of the two emergency road ambulance
service providers nor Health NZ record when an incident is co-attended by Police. These parts of
your request are refused under section 18(g) of the OIA as this information does not exist.
In response to part 4 of your request, Health NZ and ACC funding for ambulance services is not
contractual y tied to a specific type of callout. Therefore, we cannot provide a figure for the amount
funding provided for ambulance services for mental health calls. This part of your request is
refused under section 18(g) of the OIA as this information does not exist.
