(MBIE) requesting, under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), the following information:
Dear Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment,
Your website has documents about policy decisions relating to gene technology regulation, but I cannot
see any documentation relating to the Gene Technology Bill. Is this on your website?
If not, I would like to request under the Official Information Act any advice provided to the Minister of
Science, Innovation and Technology about the Gene Technology Bill following Cabinet decisions on 12
August 2024. This includes any papers that were taken to Cabinet relating to the Gene Technology Bill.
You rescoped the request to:
I am particularly interested in any material taken to Cabinet following the decisions on 12 August 2024.
For example, did Cabinet change any of these decisions? Did Cabinet authorise the introduction of the
Gene Technology Bill?
I am writing to advise you that MBIE will provide a response but needs to extend the time available to
answer your request. MBIE’s response will be sent to you no later than 8 October 2025. The reason for the
extension is that consultation with a relevant stakeholder is necessary to make a decision on your request

please contact
[email address]. You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of our decision to extend the
time limit. Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or
