farbeyond commercial aviation ? the strategic, state-backed
influenceoperations orchestrated by the government of Qatar,
particularly throughentities like Qatar Airways and other affiliated
institutions. Qatar Airways? Unprecedented Growth: AtWhose Cost? In
the 2023?2024 financial year,Qatar Airways Group reported its
strongest financial performance in 27 years,with: - Net profits of QAR
6.1 billion (US$1.7 billion) - Total revenue of QAR 81 billion
(US$22.2 billion) This follows a decade of heavy losses: - 2021: QAR
14.85 billion loss - 2020: QAR 19.45 billion loss - 2019: QAR 7.99
billion loss - 2018: QAR 251 million loss Such a sharp rebound ? with
no majorrestructuring or transparency ? raises fundamental questions
about the economicstrategy behind this recovery, and more critically,
who is bearing thecost of such a turnaround. Unfair Competitive
Advantage ThroughState Wealth Qatar Airways enjoys unlimited
financialbacking from the Qatari government, allowing it to operate
with virtually nocommercial risk, undercutting global aviation norms.
National carriers inEurope, Australia, and elsewhere must comply with
market rules, financialscrutiny, and shareholder accountability. Yet
Qatar Airways, shielded from suchburdens, can afford to slash prices,
absorb losses, and engage in lavishinternational branding efforts under
the guise of sponsorship ? leavingnational carriers struggling to
compete in a lopsided environment. Sponsorships as Political Tools:
BeyondAviation Qatar?s influence campaigns go far beyondQatar
Airways. Under the umbrella of ?sponsorship? and ?development,?
theQatari state has extended its reach deep into European and
internationalinstitutions, with suspiciously strategic motives. Examples
include: - Ooredoo and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG): An ongoing
partnership with a Qatari telecom company that reinforces Qatar?s
brand while PSG receives major state-linked financial support ?
distorting fair play in football. - Qatar Development Fund and the
United Nations: Contributions to UN programs have been publicly
leveraged to project humanitarian credibility, while simultaneously
shielding Qatar from criticism over human rights violations ?
particularly those tied to the 2022 World Cup. - ROLACC (Rule of
Law and Anti-Corruption Centre) & ACE Award: Lavish awards,
ceremonies, and prize money under the name of anti-corruption, when
Qatar?s own record on judicial transparency and governance is
questionable. These programs often serve as soft power mechanisms to
influence legal and governance bodies abroad. - UEFA and the
International Olympic Committee: Qatar-linked entities have developed
close financial and political ties with international sporting institutions,
further entrenching Qatar?s ability to deflect criticism through visibility
and sponsorship. These engagements may appear charitable
orcommercial on the surface, but in reality, they function as
backdoordiplomatic tools, used to gain influence over public
perception,institutional policy, and even leadership decisions within
democraticnations. Manchester United Deal ? A Case in Point Qatar
Airways? reported £1 billion offerover ten years for Manchester
United?s stadium naming rights came witha condition: that Sheikh
Jassim ultimately assumes ownership of theclub. This is not simply
sports marketing. It is a strategic investmentstructured to gain both
brand equity and asset control ? raising seriousethical and legal
questions about transparency, governance, and foreigninfluence in
