Subject: Hawkins Hill speed bumps
Hey team.
Did any of you actually find out how much each speed hump cost ratepayers?
I asked via FYI portal on 4 March 2024: her
e https://fyi.org.nz/request/25986-reasons-for-delay-and-request-
for-cost-for-planned-install-of-12-watts-design-speed-humps-on-hawkins-hill-road-brooklyn-in-march-2024
On 3 April 2024 (the last day of 20 working day deadline) the response was extended to 3 May 2024.
This was provided, partially, on 30 April 2034. However the cost is still unknown.
Do any of you actually know the cost per hump?
I'm still interested in knowing as the works have been impacted greatly, and in places have have failed due to
the Airways Radar dome civil works and the frequent 20T trucks and the 100T crane that were used in those
works. This hasn't provided value for money at all. I do wonder if the humps ought to have been delayed until
those works were completed.
But what do I know :-)
I'm watching Korāu Tōtōū.

Hi Tory and Barbara,
I went to the Hawkins hill rd this morning. I was there for about half an hour and saw only two cars: one on
the way up and the other car on the way down.
For some of you who may not be familiar with the road, this is a very quiet road with dead end and public
vehicles are restricted at night. I take health and safety very seriously. However, I am not convinced if 12
speed bumps in a very quiet "1km"rd with public vehicle restriction at night is a priority at this stage. It
might be a priority back in 2018" when the decision was made but now????
May I please request this project to be placed on hold until further discussion.

Subject: RE: clarification
Kia ora Councillor Abdurahman,
I have attached an email that was sent out to Southern and Western Ward Councillors on 8th
February which gives a brief overview of the project’s history, funding and rational for the
installation of 12 speed humps on the Right of Way for your information.
Public vehicles are restricted at night from Hawkins Hill Right of Way in a similar way to some of
our other reserves to prevent antisocial behaviour and vandalism. The gate at Ashton Fitchett is a
condition of consent relating to the wind turbine and was originally managed by Meridian to
control vehicle access to the Wind Turbine in the evening with management being given to WCC
in 2016. A second gate was reinstated at the Wind Turbine carpark restricting vehicle access
further into Te Kopahou reserve and onto the private Southernthread Road Right of Way as an
action from the 22nd November 2018 City Strategy Committee meeting referred to in the
attached email.
Funding for the project was approved as part of the 2021-31 Long Term Plan and the installation
of the speed bumps is being completed out of already existing budgets as part of the approved
work programme to contribute towards our health and safety obligations as the grantor of the
easement and to the public using the Right of Way.
After discussion with our contractors and Assurance team, the contract amount for the upcoming
works has been withheld under section 7(2)(b)(ii) of the Local Government Official Information
and Meeting Act. Withholding this information under the Act was made after consultation with
one of our contractors who did not want the project amount released. It’s important that our
relationship with our suppliers is amicable and making this information available would likely
prejudice their commercial position. In making this decision we have considered the public
interest considerations in section 7(1) of the Act.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.

Will Melville

Subject: clarification
Hi there,
Can someone please confirm if this is true? Also appreciate any background and rational for the
speed bumps as it seems to have low significance compared to the investment that is required.
“Hawkins Rd - 15 Speed bumps being instal ed!
This is a semi private road that is locked off by heavy gates each night.
What is the WCC thinking? How much is this costing? What is the problem with this road they
think exists?
Why is this money not going into pipes instead of wasted on 15 speed bumps. How much
longer can we put up with this wasteful spending.
Absolutely ridiculous!”
