Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request, received on 6 August 
2025. You requested: 
 
“In the United States the intelligence community from time to time classifies or prevents 
scientific research from being published on national security grounds, especially when 
such research is federally funded.

Please detail for me how many scientific projects or papers (if any) in New Zealand are 
entered into control by the classification system per year in the last 5 years.” 
 
We have interpreted your request as seeking the number of scientific projects or papers that 
have been classified for national security reasons during the period 6 August 2020 – 6 
August 2025. 
 
This office does not hold information relevant to your request and we do not believe such 
information is held by another Minister or agency subject to the Act. Therefore, we have 
decided to refuse your request under section 18(g) of the Act. 
 
Prior to reaching this decision we considered seeking refinement of your request to clarify 
specific aspects, such as the scope of "scientific projects or papers" or the agencies involved. 
However, it was determined that refinement would not address the fundamental issue that no 
single entity subject to the Act holds the requested information. As such, refinement would 
not enable us to better answer the request.
